Pricing
Do you take a cut of my sales?
No. You pay your plan, and Stripe’s own processing fees. There are no transaction fees and nothing else.
Is there a free plan?
No. Every plan is paid, and every plan has every feature: the only difference is how much you can store.
Do you charge for bandwidth or downloads?
No. Downloads are never metered and there are no bandwidth limits: you pay for the storage your files take up, and nothing for how often they are downloaded.
Can I pay yearly?
Yes. Pay for ten months and get twelve: Starter £90, Pro £290 and Scale £990 a year.
What counts towards my storage?
The files you upload to sell. Test mode has a separate 2 GB space for trying things out, and test files are deleted after 30 days.
What happens if I cancel?
You keep selling to the end of the month you paid for, and 10 days after. Buyers can still download for 90 days after your plan ends; then your files are deleted. We email you 14 days before.
Payments and tax
Do I need a Stripe account?
Yes. SugarCart is a Stripe App: it installs on your Stripe account and works with the products and prices already there. If you are new to Stripe, you can open an account first.
Where does the money go?
Straight into your own Stripe balance, paid out on your usual schedule. SugarCart never touches it.
Do you handle VAT and sales tax?
No. SugarCart is not a reseller or a merchant of record: you sell directly from your own Stripe account, so tax sits with you and Stripe. The simplest route is Stripe Managed Payments, where Stripe becomes your merchant of record and calculates, collects and files VAT and sales tax for you, for a fee of its own. Or use Stripe Tax and stay the seller yourself. About Stripe Managed Payments
Where is Stripe Managed Payments available?
Your business needs to be based in one of 37 countries: the US, Canada, the UK, every EU country, Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Australia, Hong Kong, Japan or Singapore, and Stripe reviews each account first. Your buyers can be in more than 195 countries, and Stripe handles the tax in more than 80. It covers digital products only, each with a digital tax code. Based somewhere else? Use Stripe Tax and stay the seller. Stripe’s eligibility list
Can I sell subscriptions?
Yes. A recurring price in Stripe makes a subscription, and access follows the payments: it pauses if a renewal fails and comes back when it is paid.
Files and delivery
How big can files be?
Up to 50 GB each, within your plan’s storage. Uploads go straight to storage in parts and resume after a dropped connection.
What can I upload?
Anything you have the right to sell, apart from programs that run on a double-click: zip those first. Every upload is scanned before it is delivered.
How do buyers get their files?
Straight after paying, they land on their download page. They also get the link by email, and a library where they can download again any time, signed in by an emailed link. No passwords.
Can I stop links being shared?
Set how long links last and how many times each file can be downloaded. A link opened from too many networks is flagged, and can pause itself until you decide.
Can I send buyers an update?
Yes. Upload the new version and everyone who bought gets it on the link they already have. Emailing them about it is up to you.
Your store
Can I sell physical products?
Technically, yes: Stripe takes the payment and collects shipping details as it always does. But SugarCart is built for digital products. It delivers files, so posting anything physical is up to you.
Do I need a website?
No. Make a Payment Link in SugarCart and share it anywhere: your bio, a post, an email. Buyers go straight to their download page. When you want a store of your own, our Astro themes plug in.
Why not just use Shopify?
Shopify is built for physical shops. Its Digital Products app takes 5 GB per product, across up to 50 files, where SugarCart takes 50 GB per file. It wants you on Shopify Payments, and keeping Stripe on its Basic plan adds 2% to every sale. And you would be running a whole store, with a theme, apps and checkout settings, just to sell downloads.
Can I sell from my own site?
Yes. A publishable key reads your catalogue at build time and starts a Stripe Checkout from your own pages, in Astro or any static site.
Can I block countries or buyers?
Yes. Pick the countries you cannot license into and they cannot buy or download, and refuse checkout to specific email addresses.
Which languages do buyers see?
Download pages, the buyer library and every email to a buyer come in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese (Brazil), Japanese and Polish.
Can I manage it from Claude?
Yes. Connect the SugarCart MCP server and ask your assistant to find an order, resend a download link, attach files or make a Payment Link.
Your data
What do you store?
Only what it takes to deliver your files and give you useful numbers. Stripe keeps your products, prices, customers and payments, and we never copy them. We keep your files and, for each order, the buyer’s email (encrypted), the amount, and the country and language the sale came from, so you can see where your sales come from. Each download records a country, a device summary and a partial IP address, cleared after 90 days. Full IP addresses are never stored.
Can a buyer have their data deleted?
Yes. Their personal details can be erased from every order they made; only what your accounts need is kept.
Can I export my sales, customers and licences?
Yes, any time. Download your orders, customers, licences with every activation, downloads, subscriptions and files as CSV, or export everything at once as JSON in a zip. Your AI assistant can fetch an export for you too.
