Standard rates from each platform’s pricing page: Gumroad, Lemon Squeezy and Creem on 6 October 2026; Payhip, Sellfy and Shopify on 1 November 2026. SugarCart is the Pro plan plus Stripe’s UK card fee; Payhip is its Plus plan; Shopify is Basic on Shopify Payments, billed monthly (with Stripe instead, Basic adds 2% to every sale); Sellfy is Premium, billed monthly, since £5,000 a month is past its Business plan’s $50,000 yearly cap (over a cap, Sellfy asks you to upgrade or charges 2% on the excess). US dollar fees at $1 = £0.76; payout and currency conversion fees are left out for everyone. Gumroad, Lemon Squeezy and Creem are merchants of record, so their fee covers collecting and paying sales tax for you. With SugarCart you are the seller: turn on Stripe Managed Payments and Stripe does that too, for a fee of its own.
Why not Shopify?
It is a fine shop for things in boxes. For downloads, it gets in the way.
Files stop at 5 GB
Shopify’s Digital Products app takes 5 GB per product, across up to 50 files. SugarCart takes 50 GB per file.
Leave Stripe, or pay more
Shopify wants its own payments. Keep Stripe on Basic and every sale pays Shopify 2% on top of Stripe’s fee.
A whole store to run
A theme, apps, checkout settings and a domain, just to sell a download. SugarCart adds files to the Stripe you have.
Questions about money.
Pricing
Do you take a cut of my sales?
No. You pay your plan, and Stripe’s own processing fees. There are no transaction fees and nothing else.
Is there a free plan?
No. Every plan is paid, and every plan has every feature: the only difference is how much you can store.
Do you charge for bandwidth or downloads?
No. Downloads are never metered and there are no bandwidth limits: you pay for the storage your files take up, and nothing for how often they are downloaded.
Can I pay yearly?
Yes. Pay for ten months and get twelve: Starter £90, Pro £290 and Scale £990 a year.
What counts towards my storage?
The files you upload to sell. Test mode has a separate 2 GB space for trying things out, and test files are deleted after 30 days.
What happens if I cancel?
You keep selling to the end of the month you paid for, and 10 days after. Buyers can still download for 90 days after your plan ends; then your files are deleted. We email you 14 days before.
Payments and tax
Do I need a Stripe account?
Yes. SugarCart is a Stripe App: it installs on your Stripe account and works with the products and prices already there. If you are new to Stripe, you can open an account first.
Where does the money go?
Straight into your own Stripe balance, paid out on your usual schedule. SugarCart never touches it.
Do you handle VAT and sales tax?
No. SugarCart is not a reseller or a merchant of record: you sell directly from your own Stripe account, so tax sits with you and Stripe. The simplest route is Stripe Managed Payments, where Stripe becomes your merchant of record and calculates, collects and files VAT and sales tax for you, for a fee of its own. Or use Stripe Tax and stay the seller yourself. About Stripe Managed Payments
Where is Stripe Managed Payments available?
Your business needs to be based in one of 37 countries: the US, Canada, the UK, every EU country, Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Australia, Hong Kong, Japan or Singapore, and Stripe reviews each account first. Your buyers can be in more than 195 countries, and Stripe handles the tax in more than 80. It covers digital products only, each with a digital tax code. Based somewhere else? Use Stripe Tax and stay the seller. Stripe’s eligibility list
Can I sell subscriptions?
Yes. A recurring price in Stripe makes a subscription, and access follows the payments: it pauses if a renewal fails and comes back when it is paid.
